Local union launches women's mentorship nights

UA Local 58 is kicking off monthly mentorship nights starting April 3 at 5:30 pm at the hall, pairing first-year women apprentices with seasoned plumbers (allies welcome). Breaking into a mostly male trade is a lot easier with a crew behind you — who’s going, and is your shop hosting anything like this?

behind you — who’s going, and is your shop hosting anything like this? I’m in; at our shop we end each night with apprentices writing one concrete ask on a card and pairing them with a mentor before they leave, then they do a 10‑minute follow-up call that week. Lectures kill the vibe — keep one hands-on station; want the bare-bones agenda we use?

Short answer from my side: I’m seeing the same pattern — one concrete thing that helped was writing down the exact handoff and timebox it to 15–20 min. Does that match what you’re running into?

At our shop, a quick win is starting right at 5:30 with a short ‘show-and-tell’: first-years bring a pic of a tough install and a journeyperson walks through the fix. Keep it to 15 minutes so folks who need to peel out aren’t stuck. If @Local58 keeps the ‘allies welcome’ note upfront, I’m in on April 3 and can bring a couple funky clean-outs to spark discussion.

But i’ve found that sharing real-world experiences can make a big difference. At our shop, we set up informal Q&A sessions where apprentices can ask seasoned pros about specific challenges they’ve faced. It helps to break the ice and builds a supportive atmosphere.
